Las Cruces City Council convened on October 15, 2024, to discuss the fire department's proposed master plan and receive updates on sustainability efforts. Fire Chief Jason Smith outlined the development of strategies for the next seven to ten years, ensuring alignment with community goals. The draft of this master plan is expected by November 12, 2024.

Sustainability was another key topic during the session. Representatives from Lotus Engineering and Sustainability reported that Las Cruces had lower emissions per capita compared to other regional cities in a recent inventory. The city's greenhouse gas emissions decreased by about 12% from 2018 to 2023, attributed to factors like landfill gas capture systems and reduced vehicle miles traveled.

Lisa LaRocque, the City's Sustainability Officer, expressed satisfaction with these results: “I am both pleased and surprised by the great results that we saw city-wide by reducing greenhouse gases by 12 percent and within the municipality by 22 percent.” She also discussed efforts under the Climate Action Plan aimed at clean energy and resilience for disadvantaged communities.

The council received updates on various projects funded through a bond issued in 2022. These include new fire stations, park improvements, public recreation complexes, and affordable housing developments such as Peachtree Canyon Apartments.

All City Council meetings are available for viewing on Las Cruces' YouTube channel. The next regular session is scheduled for October 21 at Council Chambers.
