Las Cruces Public Libraries is launching its first English as a Second Language (ESL) Film Club meeting with a presentation of "In the Heights" on Saturday, November 16. The event will take place from 1-3:15 p.m. at the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library.
The film, adapted from the Broadway play by Lin-Manuel Miranda, showcases the vibrant Latinx community of Washington Heights in New York City. The storyline highlights characters sharing their life stories and dreams through musical numbers that mix Latin rhythms with dance routines. It is directed by Jon M. Chu and features actors including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Melissa Barrera, Stephanie Beatriz, Ariana Greenblatt, and Leslie Grace. The movie carries a PG-13 rating.
To support language learning, the film will be paused occasionally to allow attendees to read scenes together for pronunciation practice. This initiative aligns with studies indicating that ESL students experience a 17% improvement in comprehension when subtitles are used.
The ESL Film Club aims to provide opportunities for community members to engage with Latinx-authored plays turned into films in English, accompanied by Spanish subtitles.
