Officer-involved shooting under investigation in Las Cruces

On November 11, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers from the Las Cruces Police Department responded to a report of a man armed with a gun outside an apartment complex on the 1300 block of S. Espina. Upon arrival, an officer encountered the armed individual, resulting in the officer discharging their weapon and shooting the man at least once.

The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Danny Garcia De Leon, was arrested and received medical treatment before being released from the hospital. No officers were injured during the incident.

The Dona Ana County Officer-Involved Incident Task Force is investigating this case. The task force includes members from the New Mexico State Police, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State University Police Department, and Las Cruces Police Department.

In related city news, most City of Las Cruces offices were closed on November 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Emergency services such as police and fire departments continued their operations as usual.
