Las Cruces Utilities Water Collections has reported an increase in the buildup of flushed wipes at several lift stations. Residents are reminded that all types of wipes should be disposed of in the trash, despite packaging claims that they are "flushable." Flushing wipes can lead to sewage backups in homes and blockages in city wastewater facilities.
To address this issue, Las Cruces Utilities will distribute door hangers in neighborhoods where lift stations have been affected. These notices will remind residents: “Please Do Not Flush Wipes of Any Kind.”
The utility department sees this as an opportunity to educate all Las Cruces residents about the negative impact flushing wipes can have on wastewater systems and facilities.
For more information on what items should not be flushed, residents are encouraged to visit the webpage: LasCruces.Gov/WhatNotToFlush.
