The City of Las Cruces is set to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Keep Las Cruces Beautiful program, showcasing a newly completed mural inside the Triviz/I-25 tunnel. The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2024.
City Council District 1 Representative Cassie McClure and City Council District 3 Representative Becki Graham will speak at the ceremony. The mural's path begins in District 1 and extends through District 3.
The project began in 2020 when Keep Las Cruces Beautiful (KLCB) collaborated with the Youth Conservation Corps to create a mural within the Triviz/I-25 tunnel, which intersects with the Outlet Channel Trail. Funding was provided by YCC and the New Mexico Clean and Beautiful program to revitalize this initiative. While maintaining most of the original artwork from 2020, KLCB added twelve new pieces inside. Updates were made to include the latest logos of the City, State, and KLCB. The outside entrance was redesigned to feature local Las Cruces symbols, while state symbols adorn the interior mural.
Students from various programs such as After School, Weed and Seed, Teen Connection, Youth Development and Diversion Programs, along with members of the Las Cruces Police Department Community Outreach Unit and others contributed to this project. Partners include the New Mexico Department of Transportation, City of Las Cruces Public Art, and New Mexico Tourism Department Clean and Beautiful Grant.
