Police arrest suspect in Las Cruces motel crash that killed woman

Las Cruces police have apprehended a suspect in connection with a fatal crash at a local motel. The incident occurred on Friday, December 6, 2024, when Alan Leyva-Vasquez, 22, allegedly reversed a Chevrolet Suburban into the Imperial Sky Motel located at 1865 W. Picacho Ave. Inside the motel room, a 59-year-old man sustained minor injuries, while Kari J. Scholin, aged 55, died from her injuries at the scene.

Leyva-Vasquez was taken into custody on Friday afternoon and is currently held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. He faces one felony count of vehicular homicide.
