Las Cruces police are cautioning drivers about the risks of vehicle warm-up thefts. These incidents occur when cars are started and left unattended during cold weather to warm up or defrost. Although many modern vehicles offer remote-start features, these too can attract thieves.
Authorities urge drivers not to leave vehicles running without supervision, especially with unlocked doors. They advise against leaving children, keys, or valuables inside the car. Important documents, firearms, and garage door openers should also be removed from vehicles.
Motorists are encouraged to use audible alarm systems with automatic kill switches and etch Vehicle Identification Numbers on windows. Locking doors and windows is essential when leaving a vehicle unattended. Parking in garages or gated areas is recommended for added security.
Residents should report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods immediately. In case of a stolen vehicle, contact the police at (575) 526-0795 or dial 911 in emergencies, providing details like make, model, color, VIN, and license plate number.
The City of Las Cruces continues to support its community through various initiatives despite changes in municipal services due to seasonal observances like Veterans Day closures.
