Las Cruces City Councilors convened on December 9, 2024, to discuss the ongoing Realize Las Cruces project. This initiative aims to update land development codes in line with the Elevate Las Cruces Comprehensive Plan.
City staff and community members, including the Historic Preservation Commission and the New Mexico Construction Association, shared feedback on proposed changes. The Realize Las Cruces Technical Advisory Committee is leading this effort, now in its final stage of amending the code.
Topics under review included roadway cross sections, park dedication, outdoor lighting, and land-use restrictions. Councilor Becki Graham highlighted the importance of designing roadways that accommodate emergency vehicles. Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo stressed the need for growth in underserved areas.
The document will be refined by staff and consultants for City Council consideration on February 18, 2025. No decisions were made during this session.
Drafts of Realize Las Cruces and its Technical Manual are available online. Meetings can be viewed on the City's YouTube Channel. The next regular council meeting is scheduled for December 16 at Council Chambers.
