The City of Las Cruces is embarking on a significant initiative to revitalize the neighborhoods surrounding the El Paseo and S Solano corridors, stretching between Lohman and University Avenues. This project aims to transform these areas into vibrant, pedestrian-friendly communities with an emphasis on sustainable development and equitable growth.
"Our goals extend beyond revitalizing commercial and retail areas; they encompass a holistic approach to urban renewal that prioritizes infrastructure improvement, environmental sustainability, social equity, historic preservation, and public safety and health," stated city officials.
To engage the community in this process, a public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, 2025. Residents are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts on the proposed plans.

In addition to this urban development project, Las Cruces Public Libraries is organizing a series of poetry discussions and crafting sessions titled "Palabras y Artesanias" (Words and Crafts). The first session focused on "Ancestry and Identity" will commence soon.
Moreover, the Citizens Police Academy offers a tuition-free four-week program designed to familiarize community members with the operations of the Las Cruces Police Department. The next class is set to begin shortly.
Residents interested in educational opportunities can enroll for spring 2025 at various locations including Alameda, Cesar Chavez/Sunrise, Jornada, and Loma Heights. Enrollment costs $100 per semester with payment options available.
The city also encourages residents to learn more about municipal operations such as traffic light control or city council organization through various programs offered throughout the year.
Additionally, workforce development programs are available to support residents in achieving career goals through skills training and job placement services.
Las Cruces continues its tradition of hosting community events such as the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony scheduled for December 7, 2024 at Plaza de Las Cruces. This event provides an opportunity for community engagement during festive times.
For safety concerns during winter months, residents are advised to schedule Pilot Relight and Safety Checks promptly to avoid delays when cold weather arrives.
Lastly, in observance of Veterans Day on November 11, 2024 most city offices will be closed while essential services like police and fire departments remain operational.
